CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS' & SAILORS' STORIES
MONTHLY FEATURE STORY
Major General David
McMurtrie Gregg
2nd Division of the Cavalry Corps
Army of the Potomac
Union Army
Confederate Cavalry General J. E. B. Stuart attempted to attack the Union Army from the rear on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The attack was coordinated with Confederate General Pickett's infantry frontal charge. The Confederate cavalry was stopped by Union General David McMurtrie Gregg's cavalry. This may have been the most important Union cavalry victory of the Civil War. General Gregg participated in more than forty engagements during the Civil War. At first, the cavalry was primarily used for screening the Union infantry in actions such as the Seven Days Battles. At the Battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg, the cavalry was held in reserve. When Union General Joseph Hooker took command, he began to more effectively use the cavalry. At the Battle of Chancellorsville, General Gregg's division caused a substantial amount of damage behind the Confederate Army. In the largest cavalry engagement of the Civil War at Brandy Station, General Gregg unsuccessfully attempted to capture Confederate General Stuart's headquarters. He did capture valuable intelligence information about the Confederate's plans to invade Pennsylvania and Maryland. In Union General Grant's Overland Campaign, Gregg's cavalry screened the Union forces and participated in the Battle of Yellow Tavern where General J. E. B. Stuart was killed.
David Gregg resigned from the Union Army on February 8, 1865. The only reason given for his leaving the army before the culmination of the Civil War was to return to his civilian life that had been neglected during three years of continuous field service.
The other events of David Gregg's life seem mundane. He was born on April 10, 1833 in Huntington, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1855. David Gregg served as the U.S. Consul in Prague, Austria-Hungary for about a year. He was elected to be the Auditor General of Pennsylvania. He served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. David McMurtrie Gregg died on August 7, 1916 in Reading, Pennsylvania.
