Robert B. Green enlisted in Holcombe's Legion of South Carolina. This was one of the first fighting units to support the Cause for Southern Independence. They fought in many battles including: Edisto Island, South Carolina; Rappahannock Station, Virginia; 2nd Bull Run, Virginia; South Mountain, Virginia; Sharpsburg, Virginia; Jackson Siege, Mississippi; Charleston Harbor, South Carolina; Stony Creek Station, Virginia; Nottoway Bridge; Jarratt's Station, Virginia; Bermuda Hundred, Virginia; Petersburg Siege, Virginia; Fort Stedman, Virginia; and Five Forks, Virginia. They surrendered with General Lee at Appomattox Court House. His brother, William F. Green, Jr., served in the 2nd South Carolina Artillery.
