Private Alfred Gatlin Matthews
2nd Texas Cavalry
Confederate Army

Alfred Gatlin Matthews enlisted as a private in Captain Carrington's Company of the 2nd Texas Cavalry in the beginning of 1864.  His brother, John Cornelius Matthews, was also a private in the same unit.  They were part of the Colonel John S. Ford's Expeditionary Force that recaptured Brownsville, Texas.  Ford's force also defeated a Union force of 900 men near San Martin Ranch.  This ended the Union campaign to control the Rio Grande River.  The final skirmish of the Civil War was later fought and won by the Confederates south of Brownsville along the Rio Grande River.
