Private James J. Cochran

Private James J. Cochran served in Company E of the 40th Alabama Infantry. The unit was also described as being the 40th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers in John Creed Moore's Brigade of John Forney's Division. James Cochran received a serious wound during the siege of Vicksburg. After the surrender on July 4, 1863, he was paroled on July 16, 1863. He was carried on the S. S. Crescent to Mobile Bay, and he was released from service on August 4, 1863. He died from his wound on October 3, 1863 in Choctaw County, Alabama.
